Chrysalis Insight Incorporated is a not-for-profit organisation that is commited to rebuilding and connecting community to lesson the destructive effects of problem gambling.
Our vision is that the provision of safe, recreational alternatives to poker machine gambling will make a difference to those who are in crisis due to gambling.
Although our initial focus is problem gamblers, we recognize that our work has far wider opportunities for supporting those who are lonely and/or from addiction.
Our Mission
Our long term mission is to establish ‘The 3rd Place’, a major project that aims to rebuild our communities through the provision and promotion of people-friendly ‘3rd Places’ as alternatives to gambling venues.
“’Third Places’, or ‘great good places’ are the many public places where people can gather, put aside the concerns of home and work (their first and second places), and hang out simply for the pleasures of good company and lively conversation. They are the heart of the community’s social vitality and the grassroots of the democracy.” (Ray Oldenburg - Sociologist, The Great Good Place, 1999)
3rd Places connect individuals, decrease social isolation and rebuild strong, healthy, vibrant and interactive communities.
3rd places can be cafés, hotels, neighborhood houses, in fact any venue where people congregate.
Establishing ‘The 3rd Place’ involves providing existing venues with staff training, resources and support to market them to the community as welcoming, safe and engaging environments that:
- encourage social interaction
- support communication between people
- are inclusive, tolerant and safe
Our work covers several Projects which focus on:
- Raising community awareness of the dangers of poker machine gambling via:
- the distribution of a quarterly newsletter
- presentations to community groups
- participation in public & media debate
- volunteer participation in local fundraising and community activities
- Actively involving, training and promoting venues that provide recreational alternatives to gaming
- Supporting individuals who are recovering from a gambling addiction with links to counselling, resources and social activities
- Reducing the stigma surrounding problem gambling through the support of research projects focusing on product safety and consumer rights
